Cerbral Diversity - 4th Marking period
Adolescent Health & Nutrition: (Monday/Wednesday Only) How can you be the healthiest version of yourself? In this class, you will learn how you can make smart, nutritious choices as you grow, develop a health and fitness program that ensure you will have the fuel and energy to tackle your days.
Advanced Mathematics- 7th Grade Only (Monday/Wednesday/Friday): 7th grade students who took Advanced Mathematics during Cerebral Diversity in the 3rd Marking Period will continue tackling 8th grade material during the 4th Marking Period.
Coding Club (Monday/Wednesday/Friday): What do Minecraft, Instagram and Candy Crush all have in common? They were created using computer programming languages in a process called “coding”. If you are interested in learning to code, join Coding Club. This will be an introductory course using code.org and codeacademy.com. We will learn the math and science behind games, computer programs, and website design.
Current Events and Editorials (Monday/ Wednesday/ Friday): Would you like to learn more about world events, political elections and national/international issues? In this class, we will work on developing informed opinions by reading newspapers, news magazines, and watching news clips, and then writing our own editorials about these hot-button issues.
Debate (Monday/ Wednesday): Learn to debate as you prepare for Urban Debate League competitions. Students in this debate class will learn to research all sides of an argument, hone their debate skills, and practice with their peers.
Flag Football (Fridays Only): The final section of Team Sports CD will be flag football. The first sessions will be focused on skill development, acquisition and practice followed by several sessions focusing on team’s self-creation of "mini-practice" plans targeting specific skills or areas of gameplay needing improvement. The final weeks will consist of gameplay and/or a round-robin tournament.
Latin American Culture Studies (Monday/ Wednesday/Friday): In this course, students will study language and culture of Spanish-speaking Latin American countries. This class will focus on the current events and politics of Latin America as they broaden their definition and understanding of culture and cultural influences.
MakerEd (Monday/ Wednesday/Friday): Do you like to tinker with materials? Explore new substances? Figure out how things work? This CD will focus on exploring the materials in the world around us and will culminate with students using their own materials to create a project. There will be 5 weeks of material exploration and creation including paper, textiles, natural materials, electronics, and recyclables. After this students will develop and present their own projects. This class is perfect for students who like to create, work with their hands, and use their imagination.
Organization & Study Skills (Monday/ Wednesday/Friday): Do you struggle with staying organized? Are papers often crumpled in the bottom of your bag? Do you have a hard time organizing your schedule and staying on top of your schoolwork? Then this class is for you! Learn and develop positive habits that will support your ability to stay organized and on top of your schoolwork.
Portfolio Projects (Monday/ Wednesday/Friday): Do you have any pieces of work that you started this year and would like to continue to develop? Portfolios are a collection of your best work. In this CD, students will be developing some of their best pieces from the year with the assistance of conferencing by both teachers and peers. The portfolio pieces will focus on core academic subjects like ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
Recycling Club (Monday/Wednesday/Friday) Help our school become a Green School with our first-ever Recycling Club! In this Cerebral Diversity, you will develop and implement a building-wide recycling plan.
Urban Planning (Monday/ Wednesday/Friday): Do you ever daydream about making our city even better? In this class, you will explore how urban planners develop cities, take vacant lots and make them into usable space, and create spaces and avenues that help city-dwellers connect with one another.
