Academics

Our Approach
At MS177 Yorkville East Middle School, we embrace a philosophy in which students have opportunities to explore their interests, derive new understanding, and view the world from a multitude of perspectives.  To do this, we treat physical and social sciences equally, ensuring that students build a strong foundation in all content areas, enabling them to make educated and well-informed decisions as they grow.  We work to encourage a love for learning through engaging students in courses that not only build a strong academic foundation but extend student understanding beyond the classroom.

6th Grade Courses
All 6th grade students take the following courses:
  • ELA
  • Math
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Spanish
  • Physical Education
  • Visual Art
  • Cerebral Diversity

Our Curriculum
In each of our content areas, our students engage in a curriculum that supports student voice, self-direction and collaboration. In ELA, we are utilizing the Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project curriculum. In math, we use Connected Math Project 3, or CMP3, and in Science, we use Delta Foss.  For Social Studies, we have created a blended curriculum, focusing on key skills from Stanford's Reading Like A Historian and the New York City Scope and Sequence.

Our Classrooms
Our classrooms are bright, inviting rooms that students look forward to walking into each day. Equipped with Smart Boards and laptops, students have access to the world beyond the four walls of the school building. As collaboration is seen as one of the keys to success, students are often working together end engage in peer review, deep discussion, or group problem solving.
