Creative Writing (Monday/ Wednesday/Friday): Does your mind wander as stories and characters develop? Do new ideas and storylines excite you? Develop your characters and plots in this Creative Writing Class!
Current Events (Monday/ Wednesday/Friday): A Close Look into Today's News: Why are current events important? What impact do they have on your everyday life? In this course, we will learn and talk about the major current events going on in our world today. This course will explore current events through news scavenger hunts and class debates, and will examine biases in articles from magazines, newspapers, and more!
Math Counts (Monday/ Wednesday): Do you love math? Do you get excited when challenged with a new math problem? Then Math Counts is the class for you! In math counts, you will take on new material from the 7th and 8th grade Common Core standards in a competition format.
Organization & the Adolescent Brain (Monday/ Wednesday/Friday): Do you struggle with staying organized? Are papers often crumpled in the bottom of your back? Do you have a hard time organizing your schedule and staying on top of your schoolwork? Then this class is for you! Learn and develop positive habits that will support your ability to stay organized and on top of your schoolwork.
Typing (Monday/ Wednesday/Friday): Do you wish you were faster at typing? Does the keyboard slow you down? Would you like to type essays faster? Then typing class is for you! We will work on enhancing keyboarding skills to become more efficient typists. We will teach typing through games and introduce basic keyboard shortcuts to use in word processing programs.
Introduction to Research (Monday/ Wednesday/Friday): The Introduction to Research Seminar is designed for students who wish to complete individual or small group study projects geared to their particular interests while strengthening their research skills. Teachers must approve plans and will supervise and mentor students as they conduct their project. This course provides students with an opportunity to participate in the creation of academic learning experiences geared to individual needs, interests, aptitudes and desired outcomes.
Debate - Public Forum (Monday/ Wednesday/Friday): What do Kelsey Grammer, Oprah Winfrey, and Margret Thatcher all have in common? They all participated in debate! This quarter, we will learn the ins and outs of a variety of different types of debate! Come find out how to write a bill and prepare a speech for student congress or how to write an affirmative case for public forum! No pre-requisite skills or experience are required to sign-up for this Cerebral Diversity offering!
Sports Philosophy (Monday/Wednesday Only): In this class, students will learn about the different philosophies that coaches and athletes use to be successful not only in sports, but in all areas of life. Students will also learn about ethics, why they are important, and how they apply to sports.
Observational Drawing (Monday/ Wednesday/Friday): This class will focus on drawing from observation using line, shape, and shading. We will be working in pencil, charcoal, and ink to render realistic drawings from still life compositions.
Math Games (Monday/ Wednesday/Friday): Do you get frustrated in Math? Do you find yourself sitting in class thinking, ‘I think we discussed this last year – but I don’t remember’? Then Foundational Math Games is for you! We will be reviewing fractions, decimals, percents, positive and negative numbers by playing games in this foundational math course.
Soccer (Friday Only): In this class, students will practice foundational soccer skills, expanding into game like situations and competition. (Limited to 30 students)
